COMMUNITY

Located in Towson, the county seat, Ridge Ruxton School is a special education school serving the central region and portions of the northeast and northwest regions of Baltimore County.

SCHOOL

Ridge Ruxton School provide programs for students from three to twenty-one years of age who have been identified as developmentally delayed, intellectually limited, autistic-like, and/or multi-handicapped. Class sizes are small with a teacher and full time instructional assistant assigned to every class in order to provide individualized and small group instruction

STAFF

The multidisciplinary staff is composed of special education teachers and instructional assistants; library, art, physical education and music teachers; guidance counselor; social worker; psychologist; and registered nurses. Support services are provided by speech therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and vision teacher when appropriate. The services of a vocational evaluator and transitional career counselor are provided to older students. The majority of teachers and therapists all hold a master's degree or master's equivalency. The school administrators are certified in special education.

PROGRAMS

The programs are designed for students who require a comprehensive special education setting for all or part of the school day. Instructional areas include personal management, recreation/leisure, community, and career vocational and functional academics based on the developmental level of each child. Students are grouped into multi-aged groupings as follows:
  • Preschool and Kindergarten (3-4 years of age) - Children participate in a half-day program with emphasis on developmentally based, structured program.

  • Elementary and Middle (5-13 years of age) - Children participate in a full day program with emphasis on development in the Functional Academic Life Skills instructional areas listed above.

  • Middle and High School (13 years and older) - Students participate in a full day program with emphasis on development in the Functional Academic Life Skills instructional areas listed above. For the older students the emphasis on transitioning the student from school to the adult setting.
